Cape Henlopen Food Basket

WHO WE ARE

The Cape Henlopen Food Basket (CHFB) is an emergency food service that provides assistance to Delaware residents.

We are a non-profit corporation, (501 (C) 3, in operation since 2002. We are a completely volunteer organization.  Our 70 or so volunteers order and manage the food inventory, meet and serve clients, train new volunteers, maintain financial and client data, participate in community events, and complete all other necessary tasks.  Our volunteer board of directors makes organizational decisions to support our clients and volunteers.

Our food is supplied by the USDA, the Food Bank of Delaware, local supermarkets and other vendors, food drives, and by our own funds.  We are supported in our mission by The Lewes Rehoboth Association of Congregations, by grants to non-profits, and by a generous community of organizations and individuals.

WHAT WE CAN PROVIDE

We provide needy families a 7-10 day supply of canned and frozen food, meats, bread, and fresh produce as well as a supermarket voucher for dairy products.

HOURS OF OPERATION

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  We are closed on federal holidays.

Weather Notice:  For snow or other weather events, The Cape Henlopen Food Basket is closed when the Cape Henlopen School District is closed.

  1. While I greatly appreciate the food that has been given to me and I’m able to use much of it, I am regularly given spoiled milk, produce that is unusable due to mold, prepared food that is inedible because it tastes so bad, stale bread and rolls, and a can of fish that expired in 2018. It’s just very disappointing because I depend on this food to help me get through the month. Thank you.

    • Hello Catherine Sedlack-

We received your comment on our website about the food at the Cape Henlopen Food Basket.

We don’t have any record of your coming to the Cape Henlopen Food Basket, but in any event, we make sure that the food we give out has a current “Best Used By” date or is in line with the Food Bank of Delaware and USDA guidelines about food safety. We don’t give out milk–we give a voucher to clients to go to Safeway for milk, butter, and eggs. We purchase fresh produce several times a week for immediate distribution or, in the summer, we receive fresh produce from farmer’s markets.

Please do not hesitate to come to the Cape Henlopen Food Basket if you are in need. We will be happy to provide you with food and answer any questions you may have about what we provide. Thank you.

      Jon DeVoll
Board President, Cape Henlopen Food Basket
